Background of the Study
Linguistic barriers are a significant impediment to accessing quality healthcare services in Akure South. In a region marked by linguistic diversity, patients often struggle to communicate effectively with healthcare providers, leading to misdiagnoses, treatment delays, and decreased patient satisfaction (Akin, 2023). The interplay of multiple local dialects with the official language creates challenges in patient-provider communication, which is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment (Balogun, 2024). These barriers are exacerbated by limited availability of translation services and culturally sensitive healthcare materials. As healthcare becomes more patient-centered, addressing these linguistic challenges is essential for improving service delivery and health outcomes (Dada, 2025). This study investigates the extent and nature of linguistic barriers in healthcare settings in Akure South, exploring their impact on patient experiences and health equity, and assessing strategies for overcoming communication challenges.

Statement of the Problem
Healthcare access in Akure South is hindered by significant linguistic barriers that affect effective communication between patients and providers. The lack of common language proficiency leads to misunderstandings, reduced quality of care, and poorer health outcomes. This problem is particularly acute in a linguistically diverse environment, where patients may not speak the official language fluently. There is an urgent need to identify the specific linguistic challenges and develop strategies to overcome these barriers to improve healthcare delivery and ensure equitable access to medical services (Dada, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify the key linguistic barriers in healthcare service delivery in Akure South.
  2. To assess the impact of these barriers on patient outcomes.
  3. To propose effective communication strategies to mitigate linguistic challenges in healthcare.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary linguistic barriers in accessing healthcare in Akure South?
  2. How do these barriers affect patient care and outcomes?
  3. What strategies can improve communication between healthcare providers and patients?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Linguistic barriers significantly reduce the quality of healthcare services.
  2. Effective communication strategies improve patient outcomes.
  3. Multilingual support services mitigate linguistic challenges in healthcare.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical impact of linguistic barriers on healthcare access. By identifying challenges and proposing communication strategies, the research aims to improve patient care and health outcomes in Akure South, ultimately contributing to greater health equity and service efficiency (Balogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining linguistic barriers in accessing healthcare services in Akure South Local Government Area, focusing on communication challenges and potential solutions within the healthcare sector.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Linguistic Barriers: Communication obstacles that arise from language differences.
  • Healthcare Services: Medical care and support provided to individuals.
  • Multilingual Support: Services that facilitate communication in multiple languages.
